The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, has opened up about the circumstances that led to the removal of Prince Uche Secondus as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Speaking as a special guest at an end-of-year thanksgiving event organized by PDP stakeholders in Ahoada East and Ahoada West on Thursday, Wike detailed his reasons for spearheading Secondus’ ouster.
The event, held in Ukpata community within the Ekpeye Kingdom, was attended by notable political figures, including former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Chibudum Nwuche, Chairman of the Rivers State PDP Elders’ Council Chief Ferdinand Alabraba, and several lawmakers.
Wike accused Secondus of plotting to impose his cousin, former Deputy Governor Tele Ikuru, as the governor of Rivers State, instead of supporting Siminalayi Fubara, who eventually emerged as governor. The Minister stated that this alleged betrayal was a major factor in Secondus’ removal as PDP chairman.
During his remarks, Wike also took aim at Celestine Omehia, describing him as lacking understanding of the responsibilities of an FCT minister. Omehia had reportedly criticized Wike for not bringing developmental projects to Rivers State in his capacity as FCT Minister.
Responding to Omehia’s comments, Wike argued that while his role does not involve direct infrastructural projects in Rivers State, he has consistently worked to secure federal appointments and opportunities for Rivers people. He highlighted his record in attracting more appointments for his state under President Bola Tinubu’s administration than any other governor.
Wike dismissed Omehia’s accusations, pointing out that as the governor of Rivers State, he completed significant projects, including the Bori Internal Roads. “I paid 50 percent for the Bori Internal Road project, expecting continuity from a governor we all supported,” Wike stated. He accused Secondus of undermining party unity by pursuing personal interests.
The Minister emphasized that his actions were guided by loyalty to the party and the state, adding that he thwarted attempts to exploit political structures for personal gains.
Wike’s revelations come amid ongoing tensions within the PDP, as the party continues to navigate internal divisions and challenges.
