In a decisive move to strengthen Nigeria’s judicial infrastructure, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reiterated his unwavering support for the judiciary while assuring the timely completion of ongoing projects. His remarks came during a high-level delegation visit led by Chief Adigua Aulam Moore, Chairman of Ventures of Nigeria, alongside former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Chief Olukay Arala, and senior legal practitioners from various states.

Judiciary’s Role in Governance and Governmental Balance.

During the meeting, Chief Moore underscored the significance of the judiciary in maintaining the balance of power among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. He acknowledged Wike’s proactive intervention in ensuring the continued development of judicial facilities and infrastructure at both national and state levels.

“This is a true testament to the principle of separation of powers and the need for a well-equipped judiciary to uphold the rule of law,” Moore stated.

Budget Allocation and Minister’s Firm Stance Amid Criticism.

Responding to concerns about budgetary provisions, Wike confirmed that funds for judicial infrastructure had been allocated in the supplementary budget, which was duly submitted and approved by the National Assembly. He emphasized that criticism would not deter his administration from providing the necessary support to the judiciary.

“The judiciary’s budget was submitted and approved. I will not let this opportunity pass to contribute to the growth of the legal sector,” Wike affirmed.

NBA Leadership Under Scrutiny.

In a bold critique, Wike took issue with the Nigerian Bar Association’s (NBA) leadership, accusing it of failing to uphold the rule of law. He highlighted the NBA’s inconsistent stance on critical issues, particularly regarding its recent concerns over the state of emergency in certain regions.

“The NBA now raises concerns about the state of emergency because state governments are unable to fulfill financial commitments for their general conference. This is an unfortunate shift in priorities,” Wike remarked.

Infrastructure Inspections and Project Timeline.

Following the discussions, the minister led an inspection tour of ongoing judicial projects, including the Appeal Court building and other essential infrastructure. Wike expressed confidence that these projects would be completed ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s second-year anniversary, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to judicial excellence.

“Our goal remains the swift and efficient delivery of these projects to ensure the judiciary operates in an environment befitting its critical role in governance,” he stated.

A Strategic Push for a Stronger Legal Framework.

Wike’s latest moves signal a broader push for enhanced legal infrastructure and a more independent judiciary. As Nigeria continues to navigate legal and governance challenges, the minister’s proactive approach to judicial support and project execution underscores the administration’s commitment to the rule of law.
